Every year in January, on Sanctity of Human Life Sunday (January 22 this year), the parish Pro-Life Ministry hosts the Love Saves Lives Fundraiser.
This year's fundraiser will support a Mobile Medical Clinic (an initiative of Pregnancy Help Clinic) coming to the Ann Arbor area. This mobile ministry will provide free ultrasounds, pregnancy tests and life-affirming counseling to those facing unplanned pregnancies, right where they are!
We will have envelopes marked "Love Saves Lives" available in the Narthex along with more information about this Mobile Medical Clinic initiative. You may also donate by clicking here. Donations will be collected through Sunday. February 12. Thank you for your past support and we hope you will be able to give again this year!
One of the most beautiful and intimate ways we participate in the Mass is through the reception of Holy Communion, the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus instituted the Eucharist at the Last Supper, consecrating his body and blood for his disciples and in turn, all the faithful.
In the celebration of the Eucharist, bread and wine become the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit and the instrumentality of the priest. The whole Christ is truly present - body, blood, soul, and divinity - under the appearances of bread and wine, the glorified Christ who rose from the dead. This is what the Church means when she speaks of the "Real Presence"
of Christ in the Eucharist.
While the Body of Christ is distributed at each Mass, the Precious Blood has not always been universally available.
For centuries, the priest was the only one to consume the consecrated wine. In 1963, Vatican II, in its “Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy,” instructed the laity who have received first Communion should also receive the Blood of Christ to allow more participation in the offering at Mass. However, according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Since Christ is sacramentally present under each of the species, communion under the species of bread alone makes it possible to receive all the fruit of Eucharistic Grace. (1390)
So, as we prepare to re-introduce the distribution of the Precious Blood at Mass, it is important to understand that Jesus Christ is fully present under either species of Communion - the Precious Body and Precious Blood. So, if you receive either the Precious Body, or the Precious Blood, or both,
you receive the fullness of the grace of the sacrament.
We will begin with 2 ministers of the Precious Blood during the distribution. They will be positioned in-between the front and side ministers of the Precious Body. After a person receives, the minister of the cup will wipe the rim of the chalice with a purificator and then turn the cup a ¼ turn. We will start out with a small amount in each cup until we get a sense of how many people will be receiving.
That means we may run out before the end of distribution.
Please be patient during this initial phase reintroducing the Precious Blood. Our plan is to begin the weekend of February 25 - 26. If you have any questions about any of these changes, please feel free to contact me at 429-6118.
Thank you,
Deacon Doug
The Helping Hands Ministry at St. Andrew has been connecting parish volunteers with the needs of our parishioners this past year.
We have shared rides to Mass, accompanied a member to cataract surgery, raked leaves, cleaned out a small garden for winter weather, driven to medical appointments, assisted with packing for a move, shared friendly phone calls, shared rides to the grocery store, and more.
We need many hands to help our neighbors in need - and volunteers only serve when they are available.
